Portugal: A Photo Essay

by Michelle on June 20, 2012 · 10 comments

This is the last in Miriam’s European photo series, starring Portugal, which is really fitting with the Euro Cup (this by the way has taken over my life at the moment!) going on, and with Portugal moving into the knockout round!

Of course I’ve been cheering for Germany in the “group of death” (9 full points, woohoo!), but it’s nice to see Portugal making it out, and they will no doubt win against Czech!

Are you guys watching the Euro Cup? Who are you cheering for?

Check out Miriam’s guest post below…enjoy!

No. 1
I lost my shoes in the Atlantic Ocean in Nazaré..trying to explain all this to my Portuguese bus driver or store clerks was fun.

No. 2
Nazaré, by far the best place. The beach was beautiful, the tiles, the sun.

No. 3
Around Nazaré, being so close to the ocean there were a lot of fish for sale, other souvenirs and these shell chandeliers. I’ll be back for one of those.

No. 4
The view of Nazaré from the sítio. I’m sorry there are so many photos of this city, it was really pretty.

No. 5
I was on a pilgrimage during my time in Portugal, many of the places therefore we visited were religious. This was during a mass at theChapel of Apparitions, in Fátima. We also went to the International Rosary during the night and the procession was really nice with all the lights and different languages. A very souvenir heavy area for sure.

No. 6
In Aljustrel, this was outside of the Fatima Parish Church. I have never sweated so much.

No. 7
Again in Aljustrel. The white shoes I later lost. Also the black shoes of my friend’s also got lost towards the end of the trip. We both also lost our retainers, as nerdy as that sounds..

No. 8
In Fátima, the high tower of Our Lady of Fátima Basilica. I was going down towards the Church of the Most Holy Trinity. More modern, but just as nice to look around at. The bronze upper panels were created by the Portuguese painter, Pedro Calapez and the lower panels by Kerry Joe Kelly from Canada.

No. 9
Outside of Our Lady of Fátima Basilica. A very internationally mixed area, so many tourists, you were bound to run into someone who could speak your language.

No. 10
The Batalha Monastery. It was huge, and walking into it from the heat outside was so refreshing, it was dark and cool and beautiful inside. We ended up walking towards the Unfinished Chapels and somehow missed the cloisters, which I heard was very nice as well. The rest of the day walking around and eating too much ice cream.

I love your friend’s shots of Portugal! I was there last summer and loved the place. It’s now one of my favourite places in Europe! 😀
